Union Cabinet Approves Employees’ Unified Pension Plan
The Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) which guarantees a secured pension to the nation’s central government workforce, has received approval from the Union Cabinet under the direction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This is a momentous step. The program is expected to help 23 lakh employees of the central government; if state governments decide to use the same structure, that number might rise to 90 lakh personnel.
UPS is introducing a number of additional benefits which will go into effect on April 1, 2025. Among them is an assured pension that is equal to 50% of the average basic salary drawn during the final 12 months before retirement. Employees must have a minimum of 25 years of service in order to be eligible for this. If a person served for at least ten years their pension will be commensurate with their shorter service duration.
The guaranteed minimum pension of Rs 10,000 per month for retirees with ten years or more of service is one of the principal aspects of the system. Furthermore, the guaranteed family pension provision guarantees that sixty percent of the employee’s pension will be paid to the surviving spouse or family members just before their death.
A significant step toward ensuring our government workers have financial stability after retirement was taken when the Cabinet adopted the plan that guarantees both a pension and inflation indexation.
The government stated in a presentation following the Cabinet decision that the program incorporates the advantages of inflation indexation with dearness relief tied to the All India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (AICPI-IW) aligning it with the rules for service personnel.
In addition to gratuity, retirees will receive a lump sum payment upon superannuation. This lump payment will be computed for each six months of completed service as one-tenth of the monthly emoluments which include salary and dearness allowance at the time of retirement. Interestingly the amount of the guaranteed pension is not decreased by this payment.
One noteworthy feature of the system is that it applies to National Pension System (NPS) retirees from the past who have already reached retirement age. Arrears for the previous period, including interest computed at Public Provident Fund (PPF) rates, will be disbursed to these retirees.
Because of its flexibility, the UPS enables both current and prospective employees to choose between the NPS and the new program. But once a decision is made, it cannot be undone. Crucially, the new arrangement will not increase the employee contribution. Instead, the government will increase its contribution from 14 percent to 18.5 percent to support the implementation of the UPS.
Mission Rhumi 2024
Mission Rhumi 2024: On Saturday, India is scheduled to launch RHUMI 1, its first reusable hybrid rocket, one day after the country celebrated National Space Day. Space Zone India, a startup based in Tamil Nadu, constructed the rocket. It will make its debut at Chennai’s Thiruvidandhai. It’s interesting to note that it will carry “3 Cube Satellites and 50 PICO Satellites to a suborbital trajectory” and be launched with a mobile launcher. Space Zone India and the Martin Group collaborated to create the reusable hybrid rocket which prioritizes flexibility and reusability.
Notably, according to Money Control, the RHUMI series—which includes RHUMI-1, RHUMI-2, and RHUMI-3—is designed to reach heights of between one and five hundred kilometers.
Mission Rhumi 2024: Third Collaboration
For the third time, The Martin Group and Space Zone India are collaborating. Following their successful 2023 ‘Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Kids Satellite Launch – 2023’ effort, which involved over 2,500 kids from various schools, they are partnering again. Through this effort, a student-built satellite launch vehicle capable of transporting an incredible 150 Pico satellite research experiment cubes was created. In case that wasn’t astounding enough, in 2021, 1,200 high school students participated in the ‘Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Space Research Payload Cubes Challenge 2021’ and built and launched 100 FEMTO satellites with success.
Mission Rhumi 2024: Key Features
- It is simple to change the rocket’s launch angle from 0 to 120 degrees. It allows accurate trajectory control.
- Rhumi mission is cost-effective, innovative, and eco-friendly. It uses the descent mechanism CO2 to ensure the safe recovery of rocket components.
- Its applications affect agriculture, environmental monitoring, and disaster management more than space exploration.
- The three cube satellites were built with the particular purpose of monitoring various aspects of our atmosphere.
- Inspired by the Money Control report, these elements range from cosmic and UV radiation to the quality of the air we breathe.
- Pico satellites is going to monitor environmental factors such as vibration, accelerometer data, altitude, molecular bonding, ozone levels, toxic content, contributing to a deeper knowledge of atmospheric dynamics.
- The rocket uses a combination of liquid and solid propulsion systems, balancing environmental impact reduction with performance.
- Anand Megalingam, the founder and CEO of Space Zone India, claims that this reusable technology provides a more economical and environmentally friendly method of satellite launches.
INS Mumbai to Make Maiden Visit to Colombo
