Scotland To Host 2026 Commonwealth Games

Following Victoria Australia’s withdrawal from the Commonwealth Games because of growing expenses Scotland will host the event in 2026. Athletes from all over the world will once again be welcomed to Glasgow the 2014 Games host city although this time the event will be more intimate.

Why Australia Withdrew

The Australian city of Victoria made the decision to withdraw from hosting the 2026 Games due to mounting expenses. After more research revealed that their cost estimates had been exaggerated they decided to back out.

Scotland’s Plan to Host

The Scottish government has promised to organize the event without requiring additional funding from the general population. Health Secretary Neil Gray confirmed that the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) would provide £20 million in funding. Of this £5 million will go towards upgrading the facilities needed for the Games.

Financial Support

In addition to the funding from the CGF the UK government is prepared to provide £2.3 million as a backup in case costs go over the expected budget. This additional assistance is needed to guarantee that the Games are held affordably and sustainably.

First Minister John Swinney stressed that even though the 2026 Games will be smaller than the 2014 event they will still be a significant celebration of unity and sporting prowess.

About the Commonwealth Games

The Commonwealth Games established in 1930 bring together athletes from 72 member nations. Originally known as the British Empire Games the purpose of the Games was to foster peace and friendship. One special element is the Queen’s Baton Relay which circles the globe ahead of the Games to represent international unification. More than 20 sports are played in this four-year event. Australia holds the record for most medals won in the Games and the first-ever women’s T20 cricket competition took place at the 2022 Birmingham Games. Along with celebrating cultural diversity the Games feature vibrant rituals that showcase many customs from across the globe.

The hottest August on Record: Climate Records Keep Breaking

The frequency of record-breaking heat waves on Earth has increased with August 2024 being the hottest August on record in 175 years. The planet’s response to climate change is evident in this trend of exceptionally high temperatures.

Global Temperature Averages

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) the global land and ocean surface temperature for August 2024 was 2.29°F (1.27°C) higher than the 20th-century average which is 60.1°F (15.6°C). This makes August 2024 the warmest August in recorded history.

Regional Temperature Records

Some regions had even more extreme heat:

  • Both Europe and Oceania: had the warmest August on record.
  • Asia: Had its second-warmest August.
  • Both North America and Africa: saw their third-warmest August on record.
  • Northern Hemisphere: The summer of 2024 was the hottest ever.
  • Southern Hemisphere: Winter in the Southern Hemisphere was the warmest on record with temperatures 0.96°C above the average.
  • Decline in Sea Ice

Along with rising temperatures, sea ice levels are falling:

The total global sea ice extent (the area covered by sea ice) is the second smallest ever recorded at 8.32 million square miles. This is 1.05 million square miles below the average from 1991-2020.

Arctic sea ice was the fourth-lowest on record, substantially less than usual. Additionally Antarctic sea ice was much below average—it was the second-lowest ever observed. The persistent shredding of sea ice and the persistent shattering of heat records underscore the grave and persistent consequences of climate change. These trends are a warning that urgent action is needed to prevent more severe consequences in the future.

Periyar EV Ramasamy Remembered on 146th Birth Anniversary

On September 17, 2024 Chennai commemorated the 146th birthday of Periyar E.V. Ramasamy a well-known social reformer and rationalist from Tamil Nadu. Leading the tributes was M.K. Stalin, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, who recognized Periyar for his important contributions to equality and social justice.

Early Life and Political Beginnings

Periyar was born in Tamil Nadu’s Erode in 1879. He joined the Congress party at the beginning of his political career. He objected to the party’s treatment of caste matters particularly the division of kids into Brahmin and non-Brahmin groups in a school administered by the Congress. It was this event that made him wonder about the party’s social equality stance.

Periyar joined the Justice Party in 1925 after quitting the Congress to advocate for the rights of non-Brahmin communities. With the goal of opposing Brahmin supremacy in society and advancing social equality for all people regardless of caste he founded the Self-Respect Movement.

Vaikom Satyagraha and National Recognition

Periyar came to the notice of the country in 1924 as a result of the Vaikom Satyagraha a movement in Kerala that called for lower-caste people to have public access to the area around the Vaikom temple. His role in this movement helped establish him as a key leader in the fight for social justice in India.

Creation of Dravidar Kazhagam

Periyar established the Dravidar Kazhagam a political group that supported the creation of “Dravida Nadu” in the 1940s. The speakers of Dravidian languages, such as Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, and Kannada, were to be found in this projected territory. The same cultural and linguistic identity of these southern Indian states served as the foundation for his vision.

Social Reforms and Gender Equality

Periyar was a strong advocate for social reforms. He advocated for women’s rights  such as the ability to own property file for divorce and live freely as well as gender equality. In order to dissolve social boundaries, he also promoted inter-dining which is the habit of people from different castes eating together. He also urged people to abandon caste-based identities.

Periyar’s Legacy

Even though Periyar passed away in 1973 his concepts are still relevant in Tamil society. He is regarded as “Thanthai Periyar” or the Father of Modern Tamil Nadu in recognition of his contributions to the advancement of equality rationalist thought, and self-respect. His ideas of a fair caste-free society are still relevant today and his work has had a long-lasting influence on Dravidian politics.
